Project Overview

Advanced Glass was appointed by VolkerFitzpatrick to carry out specialist rectification works to the façade installation at Bletchley Train Station. The existing curtain walling installation had experienced issues that required investigation, remediation, and verification testing before the station could achieve practical completion and open to the public.

The scope of works involved removing all existing glazing, replacing the gasket systems, reinstalling the glazing units, and fitting new pressure plates and caps throughout the façade. Following completion of the remedial works, CWCT water testing was undertaken to verify that the revised installation achieved the required performance standards.

Design and Technical Challenges

The primary challenge on the project was identifying the root causes of the original installation failures and developing a suitable rectification strategy that could be implemented efficiently within a live project environment.

As the façade had already been installed by others, the team first needed to assess the existing workmanship, interfaces, and system assembly to determine why the curtain walling had failed to achieve the required weather performance.

Advanced Glass worked through these issues methodically, developing practical solutions that could be implemented quickly while maintaining the integrity and appearance of the façade system.

Installation and Programme

The project was delivered under significant programme pressure, as the station required practical completion in order to open to the public. This meant that the rectification works needed to be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible without compromising quality.

A team of three operatives carried out the works, which included heavy lifting operations and working at height throughout the removal and reinstallation process. Careful sequencing and efficient coordination enabled the team to complete the remedial works within the required timeframe.

Performance and Compliance

A critical part of the project was demonstrating that the revised installation resolved the original water ingress issues. Following completion of the remedial works, CWCT water testing was undertaken to verify the performance of the façade system.

The façade successfully passed the required testing, confirming that the rectification measures had achieved the necessary weather performance standards.

Outcome

The project was completed successfully within the required timeframe, allowing Bletchley Train Station to achieve practical completion and open on programme.

Feedback from the client was highly positive, particularly regarding the speed of response, technical support, and ability to resolve complex façade issues efficiently. The project highlights Advanced Glass’ capability not only in delivering façade systems, but also in diagnosing and rectifying installation and performance issues on complex infrastructure schemes.
