The Hall School, Swiss Cottage – Education Facades Project

Advanced Glass delivered curtain walling, aluminium windows, louvre systems and bespoke roof cladding for The Hall School in North London, supporting Lifebuild with a coordinated façade solution completed within a strict school holiday programme.

Project Details
TL;DR:

Advanced Glass delivered a specialist façade package for The Hall School in Swiss Cottage, North London, working with Lifebuild over a four-month programme. The project included Technal SZ75 aluminium windows, TENTAL 50TT curtain walling, ST2 commercial doors, triple glazed louvre windows and bespoke dormer roof cladding.

A key feature of the scheme was the integration of specialist louvre window systems and the delivery of a bespoke roof cladding solution to suit the building’s complex geometry. The façade had to interface with a curved roof structure, a living wall and a grass roof, requiring careful coordination and precise detailing. Installation was further complicated by restricted access, with all materials transported manually through a narrow access point. Despite programme pressures to complete works during the school holidays, Advanced Glass successfully delivered the project on time, achieving all performance requirements and supporting the client in overcoming wider construction challenges.

Project Overview

The Hall School in Swiss Cottage, North London, is an education project requiring a high-quality façade solution delivered within a constrained programme. Working alongside Lifebuild, Advanced Glass was appointed to provide glazing systems and specialist façade elements that complemented the architectural design while meeting performance and operational requirements.

The project demanded careful coordination due to its location within an active school environment and the need to complete works ahead of the new academic term.

Scope of Works

Advanced Glass delivered a façade package incorporating Technal SZ75 aluminium window systems, TENTAL 50TT curtain walling and ST2 commercial door sets. Triple glazed louvre windows were installed to provide controlled ventilation, supplied through a specialist subcontractor to meet the project’s specific requirements.

In addition, the project included a bespoke dormer roof cladding solution designed to integrate with the building’s complex roof geometry. This element required a tailored approach to ensure both performance and visual consistency with the overall façade design.

Design and Technical Challenges

The primary design challenge centred around the building’s complex interfaces, particularly where the façade systems met the curved roof structure, living wall and grass roof. These conditions required careful detailing to ensure weather tightness, durability and long-term performance.

Coordination between multiple façade elements and adjacent building features was critical. These challenges were addressed through detailed design development and close collaboration between Advanced Glass, the main contractor and the wider design team, ensuring that all interfaces were properly resolved prior to installation.

Installation and Programme

Site access presented a significant logistical challenge, with the work area located at the rear of the property and only accessible via a narrow side entrance. All materials had to be manually transported onto site, requiring careful planning and coordination.

The programme was driven by a strict deadline, with all works required to be completed during the school summer holidays ahead of student return. A team of six operatives carried out the installation while maintaining strict safety controls due to the live school environment during certain phases of the works.

Close coordination between Advanced Glass project managers, the main contractor and site teams ensured that installation progressed efficiently despite these constraints.

Performance and Compliance

The façade systems were designed to achieve a target thermal performance of 1.0 W/m²K, supporting energy efficiency requirements for the building.

Security was also a key consideration, with all door sets specified to meet PAS 24 standards. While acoustic and fire performance requirements were limited on this project, all relevant aspects of building regulations were considered throughout the design and delivery process to ensure compliance.

Outcome and Client Feedback

Despite challenges relating to roof interfaces and site logistics, the façade installation was successfully delivered on programme, allowing the building to be completed in time for the new school term.

The client expressed appreciation for Advanced Glass’ proactive approach, particularly in assisting with resolving issues related to the roof finishes and maintaining progress under tight time constraints. The project was completed to a high standard, meeting all performance requirements and reinforcing confidence in future collaboration.

The Hall School project demonstrates Advanced Glass’ ability to deliver façade solutions in constrained environments, manage complex interfaces and maintain programme certainty on time-sensitive education projects.
