Farnborough Airport – Façade infrastructure

Advanced Glass installed Technal windows, doors and curtain walling at Farnborough Airport for McLaughlin and Harvey, delivering high acoustic performance glazing within a live airside environment, completed ahead of programme and meeting all thermal and operational requirements.

Project Details
TL;DR:

Advanced Glass delivered Technal windows, doors and curtain walling at Farnborough Airport for McLaughlin and Harvey within a live airside environment.

The four-week installation programme was completed ahead of the six-week requirement, despite stringent airport security controls and high acoustic performance demands.

The façade systems were designed to achieve a 1.6 W/m²K U-value while meeting an enhanced acoustic rating of 48dB Rw to mitigate aircraft noise. Installed into pre-formed cladded openings, the package required precise coordination and disciplined site management to maintain programme momentum.

Working with six operatives under strict airside access protocols, the project was delivered on time, on budget and in full compliance with performance criteria. The scheme demonstrates Advanced Glass’ capability to deliver high-performance glazing systems within secure and operational aviation environments.

Farnborough Airport Infrastructure Façade Project

Farnborough Airport is a live aviation environment requiring strict operational control, security compliance and efficient delivery. Advanced Glass was appointed by McLaughlin and Harvey to install aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling as part of a four-week programme.

Operating airside within an active airport required structured planning, security clearance and disciplined sequencing to maintain safe operations while achieving programme objective

Scope of Works

The façade package incorporated Technal aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling systems installed within pre-formed cladded openings. Although the elements were not bespoke in form, the operational environment demanded high levels of accuracy and coordination.

No off-site fabrication was utilised, with all installation works carried out under controlled airside conditions.

Design and Technical Considerations

The primary technical driver on this project was acoustic performance. Given the proximity to active aircraft operations, glazing systems were specified to achieve 48dB Rw, ensuring internal comfort and compliance with performance expectations.

Thermal performance was also considered, with the installed systems achieving a target U-value of 1.6 W/m²K.

Interfaces were simplified by the use of pre-formed cladded openings; however, installation accuracy remained critical to maintain airtightness and acoustic integrity.

Installation and Programme

Working within a live airport introduced significant access and security controls. All deliveries and personnel movements were subject to stringent airside checks, and operatives were required to adhere to airport safety protocols at all times.

Six Advanced Glass operatives were deployed on site. Despite a programme allowance of six weeks, the façade installation was completed in just four weeks, demonstrating efficient coordination and disciplined site management.

Working at height remained a key health and safety consideration throughout the installation phase.

Outcome and Client Feedback

The project was delivered successfully, achieving all specified acoustic and thermal performance standards. Completion ahead of programme provided additional commercial certainty for the main contractor.

McLaughlin and Harvey praised the speed of installation and the professionalism of the Advanced Glass team, particularly within the highly controlled airport environment.

The scheme reinforced the importance of clear upfront communication and early coordination in achieving smooth delivery on secure infrastructure projects.

Farnborough Airport highlights Advanced Glass’ capability in delivering compliant façade systems within live, high-security aviation environments where performance and programme discipline are critical.
