Sherard’s – Primary School Refurbishment

Curtain walling and fire escape doors as part of a time-critical refurbishment for a school

Project Details
TL;DR:

Sherard Primary School – Leicester

Advanced Glass delivered curtain walling and fire escape doors as part of a refurbishment project at Sherard’s Academy Primary School in Melton Mowbray, Leicester. The educational project was completed over a three-month programme and required careful planning to meet the school’s operational and safety requirements.

Using Technal MX52 curtain walling systems, the works involved managing unusual façade interfaces typical of refurbishment projects. Key priorities included compliance with Approved Document B for fire safety and Approved Document M to ensure accessibility requirements were met.

Extensive on-site and intrusive surveys were carried out to confirm buildability and ensure the final design aligned with the existing structure. Installation was completed in time for the start of the new school term, despite minor challenges caused by damaged glass units that required last-minute replacement.

Feedback from both the client and the school was very positive, highlighting the quality of workmanship and clear communication throughout the project.

Project Overview

Advanced Glass was appointed to deliver façade works at Sherards Academy Primary School in Melton Mowbray, Leicester. The project formed part of a refurbishment programme within an operational education environment and was delivered over a three-month period, with completion required before the school reopened for the new term.

Scope of Works

Advanced Glass supplied and installed:

  • Curtain walling
  • Fire escape doors

The façade package utilised the Technal MX52 system and required careful coordination due to the constraints associated with an existing building.

Design and Technical Challenges

As a refurbishment project, the primary challenge was managing unusual and non-standard façade interfaces. Ensuring the design met the school’s operational needs and complied fully with the fire strategy was a critical focus.

The works were designed to comply with Approved Document B for fire safety and Approved Document M to address accessibility requirements. To resolve these challenges, the team carried out extensive on-site and intrusive surveys, allowing the design to be developed with confidence in both compliance and buildability.

Installation and Programme

Advanced Glass provided all access equipment required for installation, including cherry pickers and scissor lifts. A typical site team of four operatives delivered the works. The programme was driven by a fixed deadline, with all façade works required to be completed before the start of the school’s first term.

Performance Requirements

The curtain walling system was designed to achieve a thermal performance of 1.6 W/m²K. No additional acoustic or security performance requirements were specified.

Project Outcome

The façade installation was completed successfully and met all required performance standards. The only complication arose when several glass units arrived damaged, requiring a last-minute replacement to meet the school opening deadline. Despite this, the project was delivered on time. Feedback from both the client and the school was very positive, praising the quality of work and clear communication. Approved project photography is available for use.
